Amblyopia

Amblyopia

Amblyopia, sometimes called lazy eye, can lead to poor vision and make life-long tasks like reading or driving difficult. Children are at the highest risk for developing amblyopia. At Total Eyecare in Elko, NV, we recommend a child receive his/her first eye exam before the age of one. Before visiting us, learn about the causes and symptoms of amblyopia below:

Symptoms of Amblyopia

If you have amblyopia, you may experience a variety of symptoms. Some of these symptoms include:

•             Shutting one eye to see better

•             Tilting the head to see better

•             Squinting

•             Poor depth perception

•             Poor peripheral vision

Causes of Amblyopia

Amblyopia typically occurs from birth, however, it can also develop over time. This eye disorder can also occur in those with conditions like strabismus, astigmatism, or due to cataracts.

Treatment for Amblyopia

There is no cure for amblyopia, but there are some strategies our eye doctors may recommend after an eye exam. For example, we may suggest wearing an eye path, as it forces the weaker eye to work harder. The goal is to retrain the brain to use the weaker eye and strengthen this muscle. Sometimes eye drops are also used to treat amblyopia.
