Halloween Contacts

Our Total Eyecare Eye Doctors are Here to Promote Eye Safety This Halloween

Halloween is quickly approaching, which means it's that time of year for our eye doctors at Total Eyecare to inform you on how to protect your eyes from colored contacts. We understand that these contacts can complete the perfect Halloween costume, but serious eye health problems can arise if you don't choose your contact lenses wisely. These contacts can be very safe and fun if you follow some simple tips to ensure they are clean.

The Problem with Colored Contacts

Aside from legal concerns, decorative and colored contacts from unlicensed vendors pose potential health problems, including:

  • Eye infections, including pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Corneal scratches
  • Impaired vision

Unlicensed contacts can be incredibly uncomfortable due to their poor build quality. Colored contact lenses from unlicensed vendors must be avoided: they're not one-size-fits-all, there's no guarantee they've been made with safe material and manufacturing practices, and they can cause short-term or even long-term eye health problems.

Tips for Buying Colored Contacts for Halloween

If colored contacts are simply a must for your Halloween costume, then our staff at Total Eyecare encourage you to keep the following tips in mind:

Remember, colored contact lenses are considered medical devices. You should never purchase them from unlicensed vendors or anywhere that doesn't require a prescription. These include street vendors, flea markets, pop-up Halloween stores, convenience stores, and many internet sites

Talk to an Elko optometrist if you'd like to be fitted for colored contact lenses. We can provide an appropriate prescription and help you find a licensed vendor

Be sure to practice good contact lens hygiene. Wash your hands before and after touching your lenses, clean them properly, and avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes while wearing them
