Here at Total Eyecare, our optometrists can help you perform daily activities better with low vision services. Here are the most commonly asked FAQ questions we receive about severe visual impairment.
Low vision occurs when an individual’s corrected vision with glasses, contact lenses, and/or surgery in their good eye is no better than 20/70. It can also refer to individuals with tunnel vision, severe loss of their peripheral vision or significant blind spots in their vision.
Low vision is not the same as being legally blind. A legally blind individual cannot see better than 20/200 in their good eye. Individuals are also considered legally blind if their field of vision is 20 degrees or worse.
Severe visual impairment can be the result of a traumatic eye injury or eye disease that has progressed to the advanced stages. Common diseases that cause significant visual impairment include macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Cataracts can also cause severe visual impairment in the advanced stages.
Having vision that is severely compromised due to an eye injury or eye disease can make performing daily tasks, like reading and working on a computer, incredibly difficult. If you are experiencing symptoms of vision loss or suspect you have an eye disease that is causing a change in your vision, you should schedule an eye exam with your eye doctors.
Our optometrists will first perform a thorough eye exam to determine your uncorrected visual acuity and the causes of your progressive vision loss. Glasses and/or contacts may be prescribed to help you see better. If you have cataracts, our eye doctors will refer you to an eye surgeon so that they can be removed. If your vision loss cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery, our eye doctors will recommend visual aides, like magnifiers, special lights, and glasses that can help improve contrast.
