Is It Time For Your Contact Lens Exam in Elko?

Whether you’re someone who wears glasses and is ready to make the switch to contact lenses, or you’re someone who currently wears contact lenses and needs a prescription update, Total Eyecare in is prepared to administer your eye exam and, if necessary, fit you for a new pair of contact lenses.

What’s Involved in a Contact Lens Exam?

contact lens exam ElkoDuring your contact lens exam, we start by evaluating your refractive error and determining how much vision correction you need. We have instruments that can make this determination for us, including phoropters and automated instruments. This part of the exam is actually very similar to the exam we would administer if you were getting glasses.

After we’ve evaluated your refractive error, we’ll check your eye’s overall health. We’ll look for signs of glaucoma and other diseases.

During your exam, your optometrist may ask you about any pre-existing conditions you may have, such as allergies and dry eyes. This is because people with very sensitive eyes may not be a good fit for contact lenses.

How Will You Determine What Type of Lens Will Fit?

Once it’s been determined that you’re a good candidate for contact lenses, your optometrist will measure your eye to find the right fit for your future contact lenses. Your optometrist will measure your corneal curvature, pupil and iris size. The optometrist may even measure your tears to ensure that you produce enough tears to wear contact lenses.

During this part of the exam, your optometrist may discuss the different types of contact lenses with you, then he or she may even have you wear a pair of trial contact lenses, if this is your first pair of lenses. This will help your optometrist determine whether or not the type of contact lenses is right for you.
